Default VJC, Temasek to offer 4-year programme

From 2005, both will enrol Secondary 3 students to take A levels straight. Door not shut on other schools, says minister.

Students who enter the programme at Victoria Junior College (VJC) and Temasek Junior College (TJC) in 2005 will embark on a four-year course of study, which starts from Secondary 3.

They will skip the O levels and sit for the A-level examinations directly at the end of their course.

Students will transfer into these JCs from their various secondary schools.

Next year, eight institutions - the three Raffles schools, Hwa Chong Junior College in partnership with Nanyang Girls' High and The Chinese High, National Junior College and Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) - will offer integrated programmes.

St Joseph's Institution will start its programme in 2005.

At VJC and TJC, 80 per cent of the curriculum will focus on core subjects like mother tongue, mathematics and science, with enrichment activities such as industrial attachments and community service making up the rest.

5 JCs taking the integrated programme route

RAFFLES JUNIOR COLLEGE
What: Teaming up with Raffles Girls' School and Raffles Institution to offer a six-year integrated programme (IP). Students enter at Sec 1, Sec 3 or JC 1. Those entering at the secondary level will skip the O levels and go on to RJC to do their A levels.

Fees: RJC will go independent in 2005 and will announce next year if its fees are going up. (Current fees: $24 a month.)
RGS fees: $125 a month next year, rising by $25 a year until it reaches $200 in 2007.
RI fees: Currently, $200 a month.

When: The IP for Sec 1 and 3 students at RI and RGS starts next year. In 2006, 900 places at the JC1 level are expected to go to RI and RGS students, with 200 available to those from other schools.

HWA CHONG JUNIOR COLLEGE
Merging with Chinese High to offer a six-year IP. Students enter at Sec 1, although those going to Sec 2 and 3 next year have been allowed to opt for the programme. They will sit for their A levels at the end of six years. Nanyang Girls High is also offering an IP where students enter at Sec 3. They will skip the O levels and move on to Hwa Chong JC directly to do their A levels.

Fees: Hwa Chong is going independent next year, but there won't be any fee hike for next year. (Current fees: $24 a month.) For now, Chinese High students pay $200 a month.

When: The formal merger between Hwa Chong JC and Chinese High will be in 2005. The six-year programme begins next year, with Hwa Chong JC taking in an additional 450 students from other schools, including Nanyang Girls, at JC 1 in 2006.

NATIONAL JUNIOR COLLEGE
What: Is offering a four-year IP where students enter at Sec 3, skipping the O levels and preparing for the A levels.

Fees: No fee hike for now, with the new entrants paying a monthly fee of $19.

VICTORIA JUNIOR COLLEGE
When: Beginning next year with 138 students.

What: Will offer a four-year programme. Students enter at Sec 3 based on their previous school reports, a psychometric test to gauge personality type and motivation and co-curricular activitity (CCA) records. They will take the A levels at the end of four years.

Fees: Yet to be determined but the school does not expect a hefty increase, if any. (Current fees: $24 a month.)

When: Starting in 2005 with about 150 students. Direct entry will be offered to students from its affiliate, Victoria School.

TEMASEK JUNIOR COLLEGE
What: Students will enter at Sec 3 level based on their Sec 2 exam results and CCA records. They will have to undergo an interview, with those talented in music, sports and the performing arts given special consideration.

Fees: Yet to be determined but the school says a fee hike is unlikely. (Current fees: $24 a month.)

When: Beginning in 2005 with about 100 students.
